REGENT Craft has had a loud summer. While most Rhode Islanders were heading down to the beaches along Narragansett Bay, the North Kingstown startup closed the largest venture round in state history: a $240 million Series B, split evenly between $120 million in fresh equity and a $120 million debt facility arranged by Erebor Bank, the national tech lender backed by Palmer Luckey. The round brings REGENT’s lifetime capitalization to approximately $340 million.

Then came the hardware milestone. On 2 September 2026 (six days after the round was announced) REGENT published video of its full-scale Viceroy seaglider taking flight with a human crew aboard for the very first time. Skimming the surface of Narragansett Bay for roughly 30 seconds at an altitude of 33 feet and covering 1,956 feet of open water, the clip gave off unmistakable Kitty Hawk energy. It was an undeniable engineering milestone, even if it arrived roughly 12 to 14 months behind the company’s original schedule.

In an ecosystem flooded with indistinguishable quadcopter platforms and autonomous surface vessels, REGENT is an attention magnet. Its aerodynamic silhouette—a high-speed, hydrofoiling wing-in-ground-effect craft that floats at the pier, foils through the harbor, and flies inches above the waves—stands entirely apart from the pack. With two dedicated maritime-defense investors, Mare Liberum Capital Partners and AE Ventures, stepping in to co-lead the equity round alongside strategic participation from Lockheed Martin Ventures, the external optics are very positive: REGENT appears to be an ascendant defense-tech company transitioning from high-risk prototype to high-rate littoral manufacturing.

From the outside looking in, it is easy to buy the narrative. But underneath the defense branding and the capital stack lies an uncomfortable question: Is REGENT genuinely a defense company?

The answer is far messier than the press releases suggest, and considerably less certain than the national security community has been led to believe.
